Job Description
The Manager - Learning & Talent Development will own and deliver learning and talent development across M&S India. The role will build role-based capability and leadership pipelines through integrated learning, assessment and manager-led development. The position will ensure consistent execution of mandatory, functional and leadership learning supported by strong governance, digital adoption and measurable capability outcomes.
The role is responsible for learning operations and talent development programmes across Stores, Distribution Centres, Customer Service Centre and Support Centre. It will ensure scalable capability building, disciplined execution and measurable impact through data-led interventions.
Learning Strategy, Delivery & Governance
Own the annual learning plan and delivery calendar aligned with business priorities and role capability requirements.
Drive the delivery and governance of mandatory, compliance, induction, functional and leadership learning programmes across the organisation.
Own LMS MyLearning adoption and ensure its effective use for nominations, tracking, certifications and reporting.
Curate and localise content using global and plc solutions, internal expertise and external partners to deliver scalable and blended learning.
Establish periodic learning governance with business teams, HR Business Partners and Regional Training Managers to review progress, risks and impact.
Capability Building & Manager-Led Learning
Create and implement an updated onboarding programme to ensure the smooth integration of new hires and support cultural assimilation.
Adapt, design and implement role-based learning programmes to strengthen frontline capability, customer experience and operational delivery.
Drive manager-led learning by enabling Store Managers, team leads and leaders to take ownership of capability building for their teams.
Lead Train-the-Trainer programmes, certification standards and trainer and coach capability development.
Embed learning into business routines through partnerships with HR Business Partners and business leaders.
Govern store learning execution through Regional Training Managers, coaches and certified trainers.
Talent Development & Capability Pipeline
Identify capability gaps and talent risks for critical roles and translate them into targeted development interventions.
Design and conduct assessment and development centres for key talent pools and leadership pipeline roles.
Enable HR Business Partners and line managers to translate assessment insights into structured development plans.
Support talent reviews, succession readiness and development pathways for critical roles.
Track and improve development effectiveness using dashboards, insights and continuous improvement actions.
Measures of Success
Ensure mandatory learning completion within established timelines.
Drive LMS adoption, learning completion and adherence to the learning calendar.
Track attendance and learning metrics including completion and effectiveness.
Maintain audit readiness for all learning and compliance programmes.
Achieve Train-the-Trainer targets and ensure trainer certification and utilisation.
Improve manager-led learning adoption, learner effectiveness and on-the-job application.
Implement development centres and track the completion of individual development plans.
Monitor talent metrics including succession coverage and the percentage of open positions filled internally.
Track learning impact beyond programme completion, including internal talent pool readiness and performance improvement.
Ways of Working, Governance & Effectiveness
Ensure the timely delivery of learning interventions with quality and consistency across the organisation.
Use data and insights to continuously improve learning effectiveness and business relevance.
Manage learning vendors, platforms and budgets to deliver quality, compliance and value-for-money outcomes.
Proactively identify opportunities for improvement and implement solutions that strengthen capability outcomes.
Key Relationships & Stakeholders
Work closely with People Partners supporting Stores and the Support Centre.
Partner with the leadership team, Function Managers, Regional Managers, Store Managers and coaches.
Collaborate with HR Technology and Digital teams for LMS governance and learning analytics.
Work with internal subject-matter experts and external learning, assessment and content partners.
Engage with M&S International Centres of Excellence and professional communities of practice where applicable.
Key Skills
Ability to translate business needs into scalable and role-based learning solutions.
Experience designing and conducting assessment centres, development centres and structured development plans.
Strong knowledge of learning operations, LMS governance, compliance training and learning analytics.
Ability to enable managers and leaders to coach and develop their teams through a manager-led learning model.
Strong stakeholder influencing skills with the ability to build alignment and drive action through effective partnerships.
Ability to use metrics, data and insights to improve learning effectiveness and business impact.
Strong programme management, governance and delivery skills within a fast-paced working environment.
Qualifications & Experience
Candidates should have a graduation or post-graduation qualification in Human Resources, Learning, Psychology, Business Management or a related discipline.
Applicants should have 8 to 12 years of experience in Learning and Development, Capability Building or Talent Development.
Experience delivering frontline and leadership capability programmes at scale is required.
Candidates should have strong exposure to LMS-driven learning operations and mandatory training governance.
Hands-on experience in assessment centres, development centres and talent development initiatives is required.
Applicants should have a proven ability to work with business leaders to drive programme adoption and measurable outcomes.
Vendor management and programme management experience is required.
